Detroiters is a new comedy set to premiere on Comedy Central on February 7th. It is a “buddy comedy” that centers on two men named Sam and Tim. They are local small advertisers looking to make low budget commercials in Detroit while trying to stay afloat. On IMDB, the show is described as, “A touching and hilarious comedy about two best friends trying to achieve great things once again, just like the city they live in.” The show is an ode to Detroit created by to Detroit natives.
The creators of the new show are Tim Robinson and Sam Richardson. Both actors grew up in Detroit, but eventually moved away to pursue careers in acting and comedy. Both of them have had very successful careers, but they eventually collaborated and decided to take their talents home and film and create a show right in Detroit.
Sam Richardson is best known for his role in the popular comedy Veep starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. He plays arguably the funniest character in the show, Richard Splett. While Richardson was raised in Detroit, he often spent time in Ghana, West Africa where is mother lives. He went to University of Detroit Jesuit High School and then studied theater at Wayne State University. He is known for his wide range of characters from gags to impressions of public figures.
Tim Robinson is also a Detroit native known for his work as a comedian, actor, and writer on Saturday Night Live. He went to Clarkston High School and was always in love with writer comedy sketches. He has appeared on the NBC talk show Late Night with Seth Meyers twice, once acting as Meyers’ sidekick.
Together they created a fantastic pilot episode and sent it to Comedy Central for approval. Comedy Central ordered ten episodes of the Detroiters series after loving the pilot episode so much. The entire series was film in and around Detroit. The two creators stated that the show is inspired by the old Detroit local TV ads that they grew up watching.
With season one nearing its release, many critics are expecting this show to take off. This will undoubtedly lead to a renewal for a second season which means more opportunities to act and be apart of this Detroit show. Stay tuned for more updates as the show gets set for its big debut.
